Fire ecology -- Fire has been been a major force affecting much of the world's vegetation and ecosystems for millions of years. It is especially an important ecological factor in grasslands and savannas. This presentation will cover some of the basic principles of fire ecology and its role in the Midwest. Invasive species -- Plant and animal species that are non-native and invasive in our natural ecosystems now pose the most significant threat to our natural areas the native plants and animals that live there. This presentation will review some of the most troublesome invasive species that confront land managers in Iowa, including the ecological challenges they present and methods to control them.
